The admission comes in Vance\u2019s forthcoming memoir, \u201cCommunion,\u201d which is set to be released Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the dumbest things I ever said came when I argued that \u2018childless cat ladies\u2019 across the Democrat Party were running our country into the ground,\u201d Vance writes in the book, a copy of which was obtained and read by NBC News. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe comment caused two firestorms: the first when I made it, the second years later during a political campaign,\u201d Vance adds. \u201cIt was a boneheaded comment, intentionally (and successfully) provocative rather than illuminating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance, who at the time was running for a Senate seat in Ohio, made the partisan crack while appearing on Tucker Carlson\u2019s Fox News show. He described Harris, then the vice president, as one of several childless Democrats \u201cwho want to make the rest of the country miserable too.\u201d Harris has two stepchildren.<\/p>\n

The remarks resurfaced nearly three years later, in Vance\u2019s early days as Donald Trump\u2019s running mate, translating into a rocky debut on the national stage. Vance stood by the insult then, refusing to apologize or express regret for it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cI have a lot of regrets,\u201d Vance said in an August 2024 interview with NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d \u201cbut making a joke three years ago is not at the top 10 of the list.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunion\u201d \u2014 a follow-up to Vance\u2019s 2016 bestselling memoir \u201cHillbilly Elegy\u201d \u2014 covers his faith journey from Protestant to atheist to Catholic convert. His rehashing of the \u201ccat ladies\u201d episode comes in a chapter that chronicles a meeting with Pope Francis before his death last year and wrestles with Christian views on immigration and abortion.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that brings me to another lesson of the faith for Christian statesmen,\u201d Vance writes. \u201cIt\u2019s okay to admit error.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance acknowledges that the comment was \u201cenraging\u201d and writes that it \u201chad the added benefit of distracting from the actual point I wanted to make, which was that our society is becoming pathologically hostile to having kids.\u201d He adds that he \u201ccould have made that point much more effectively, and with the benefit of showing a little charity to the many Americans who \u2014 some for reasons beyond their control \u2014\u00ad don\u2019t have children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance concludes: \u201cWhen I consider the Church\u2019s admonition to respect the dignity of every life, this was a clear moment where I failed.\u201d <\/p>\n

On abortion, which he describes as \u201cone of the most challenging issues for Christians,\u201d Vance posits that the Supreme Court\u2019s overturning of Roe v. Wade \u201chas revealed the political unpopularity of our position.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance notes his opposition to a 2023 ballot issue in Ohio that codified abortion rights into the state constitution. The measure passed overwhelmingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people argue we should give up on the idea of protecting the unborn. I take a different view,\u201d Vance writes. \u201cPrudence is the better part of virtue. If your political argument on the abortion question \u2014 or any other \u2014 fails to persuade your fellow Americans, you have to make a better argument.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance then writes of women he knows who had abortions \u201cout of a fear that they had no other choice,\u201d that an unexpected baby \u201cwould ruin careers, relationships, and educational opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo these women \u2014 some of whom regret their choice \u2014 so much of the pro-life movement is about eliminating the last option they thought they had left,\u201d Vance adds. \u201cThat\u2019s why we lost the Ohio referendum, but it\u2019s also how we\u2019ll start winning people over: by reflecting Christian charity in the way we champion the unborn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Second lady Usha Vance figures heavily into \u201cCommunion.\u201d Vance dedicates the book to her \u2014 \u201cFor my darling Usha, who taught me to think on those things that are honest, just, pure, and lovely.\u201d In a recent interview with NBC News, Vance described his wife as a \u201cvicious\u201d but indispensable editor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is at least a little irony in the fact that my non-Christian wife helped lead me back to my own Christian faith, and then made it possible for me to discuss the journey on paper,\u201d he writes of Usha, a Hindu, in the book\u2019s acknowledgements. \u201cThe Lord works in mysterious ways, indeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the book\u2019s epilogue, the vice president writes of the couple\u2019s efforts to console Erika Kirk after the assassination of her husband, conservative activist and Vance friend Charlie Kirk. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs my wife held Charlie Kirk\u2019s widow on the first day of her terrible sorrow, Erika told Usha between sobs that she regretted having only two kids with Charlie,\u201d Vance writes before noting how his wife had been resistant to adding to their family.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,\u201d Vance writes. \u201cOne life was stolen from us, but another was given.\u201d<\/p>\n
