The GOP-led Congress is on the brink of a rare win on costs<\/h2>\n

Congress is on the brink of passing a sweeping housing affordability bill, a rare bipartisan victory in President Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s second term.<\/p>\n

The Senate is slated to pass the legislation this evening after voting 87-8 to advance it last week. Then it\u2019ll go to the House for one last vote before heading to Trump\u2019s desk. <\/p>\n

It\u2019ll be a desperately needed win for Republicans, who have seen their midterm election prospects deteriorate throughout the year as voters believe Trump and the GOP-controlled Congress haven\u2019t done enough to tackle the cost of living. <\/p>\n

A new of U.S. adults found that Trump\u2019s overall job approval rating is 37%, dragged down by low marks on pocketbook issues: just 33% approve of his handling of the economy.<\/p>\n

This bill gives them a tangible victory on a top affordability concern. A deal that was struck last week by key committee chairs and blessed by party leaders brought together an eclectic mix of lawmakers from all over the ideological spectrum. It was written by Sen. Tim Scott<\/strong>, R-S.C., Sen. Elizabeth Warren<\/strong>, D-Mass., Rep. French Hill<\/strong>, R-Ark., and Rep. Maxine Waters<\/strong>, D-Calif.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s something in it for just about everyone to like. Republicans have focused on the provisions to cut red tape and boost the supply of housing. Democrats like Warren have celebrated the restraints on institutional investors, saying the bill will stop \u201cprivate equity from buying up homes\u201d and raising costs for consumers.<\/p>\n

Trump had championed the provisions to \u201cban large Wall Street investment firms\u201d from \u201cbuying up in the thousands single family homes,\u201d as he put it in this year\u2019s State of the Union speech. The deal eventually came after months of haggling and House-Senate clashes over other issues, with lawmakers involved getting frustrated by Trump\u2019s mixed signals. Eventually, the negotiators figured it out.<\/p>\n

But unfortunately for Republicans who want to draw maximum attention to this achievement, Trump has other plans.<\/p>\n

The chaos surrounding his on-again, off-again Iran deal has dominated headlines over the past week, and sparked unusual backlash from within his own party. Capitol Hill is also consumed by Trump\u2019s recent moves that forced the expiration of the FISA Section 702 warrantless surveillance program, and his demand to stall his own nominee for director of national intelligence, Jay Clayton<\/strong>, a key piece of the puzzle to revive the FISA law. There\u2019s also considerable attention on the drama over Trump\u2019s costly \u2014 and so far failed \u2014 renovation plan for the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.<\/p>\n

Taken together, it\u2019s a series of distractions that Republicans would have preferred to avoid as they eagerly want to appear focused on tackling kitchen-table issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about increasing the supply of housing in this country and making it more affordable, and I think that is something that the American people want to see us working on,\u201d Senate Majority Leader John Thune<\/strong>, R-S.D., said in the run-up to last week\u2019s vote. \u201cI think this bill accomplishes that, and I hope that when it\u2019s all said and done, we will have a big house, a big vote in both the House and the Senate, and a bill that the president has signed into law.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S.-Iran talks set \u2018good foundation\u2019 for deal to end war, Vance says<\/h2>\n

High-level talks between Iran and the United States resulted in \u201ca lot of good progress,\u201d Vice President JD Vance<\/strong> said today as he left Switzerland, where the two sides agreed on a road map toward a final deal to end the war within 60 days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe laid a very good foundation for a successful final deal,\u201d Vance said at a press briefing before departing for the U.S. \u201cThe final deal is the house. We set the foundation. We haven\u2019t built the house, but we\u2019ve laid a successful foundation to get to a good place for the American people,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Technical negotiations were continuing in the mountaintop resort of B\u00fcrgenstock after a first round of marathon talks between senior figures from both countries. They had got off to a rough start, first canceled and then shaken by President Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s renewed threats.<\/p>\n

Vance confirmed that Iran had threatened to walk out over those comments, but he defended Trump. \u201cWhat we told the Iranians yesterday is when you guys engage in what us millennials might call \u2018trash talk,\u2019 you can\u2019t expect the president of the United States not to respond and not to correct the record,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n

The talks ultimately resulted in a joint statement released by mediators Qatar and Pakistan that struck a similarly positive tone, describing a \u201cconstructive atmosphere.\u201d Washington and Tehran agreed to set up new communication lines to ensure the vital Strait of Hormuz is open and end fighting in Lebanon, mediators said. <\/p>\n

Vance said that Iran had agreed to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) back into the country.<\/p>\n

He also said that Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner<\/strong> came up with \u201ca very interesting solution\u201d to unfreezing Iran\u2019s assets that would involve the U.S. and Qatar\u2019s approval and the use of the money for purchases of U.S. soy, corn and wheat. He said this was a \u201cclassic Trump deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
