Ships have begun sailing through the Strait of Hormuz under a new scheme by the U.N.\u2019s shipping \u200bagency to evacuate vessels trapped there by the conflict, a \u200cspokesperson said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The initiative, which has taken months to conclude, will enable hundreds of ships with some 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Gulf to sail through \u200bHormuz, the International Maritime Organization said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cShips have already \u200bbegun to pass under the plan,\u201d an IMO spokesperson said \u2060on Wednesday, declining to provide any details of the vessels that \u200bhad crossed.<\/p>\n

At least two dry bulk ships and one cargo ship \u200bhave sailed through Hormuz under the scheme in the past 12 hours, LSEG ship tracking data showed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

At least 35 other commercial ships, mainly dry bulk, \u200bcargo and container vessels were preparing to sail through the strait, \u200baccording to LSEG and MarineTraffic ship tracking data based on Reuters analysis of ship \u200cmovements.<\/p>\n

Those \u2060vessels are smaller commercial ships including five smaller oil tankers, coastal ships and tugs, according to analysis of the vessels waiting.<\/p>\n

Under the scheme, which the IMO said was able to begin after the U.S. and \u200bIran reached a \u200bceasefire framework, \u2060vessels will be able to use two tracks to sail out – a northern route via Iranian waters and \u200ba southern route via \u201cthe Sultanate of Oman\/United States-coordinated \u200bwaters\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cVessels should \u2060wait for instructions before proceeding,\u201d the IMO said in a note on the scheme issued on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cCrowding the waiting area will only result in \u2060the \u200bneed to pause further notifications for the \u200bsafety of navigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In recent weeks, the U.S. military had launched a mission to help ships out of \u200bthe strait.<\/p>\n
