Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem rejected a U.S.-brokered security agreement between Lebanon and Israel on Saturday a day after it was signed, describing it as a surrender to Israel.<\/p>\n

In the \u2060latest example of ongoing hostilities despite repeated ceasefires and agreements, Israel launched a drone strike in Lebanon\u2019s south.<\/p>\n

More than a million Lebanese have been driven from their homes by a conflict that has run in parallel with the wider Iran war. \u2060Hezbollah and Iran say Washington \u200bpledged \u2060to end hostilities in Lebanon as part of its memorandum of understanding signed two weeks ago to end the wider war.<\/p>\n

The framework \u2060agreed on Friday provides for a phased Israeli withdrawal from some \u200bparts \u2060of southern Lebanon, alongside the deployment \u200cof the Lebanese army. But Israeli forces would be permitted to remain in an expanded security zone for the time being, pending further implementation.<\/p>\n

In \u200ca statement, Qassem called it \u201cnull and void\u201d, \u200cand accused the Lebanese government of making unilateral concessions and undermining Lebanon\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n

He criticised provisions linking Israel\u2019s withdrawal to Hezbollah\u2019s disarmament, saying they effectively legitimised Israel\u2019s military presence and crossed \u201call red \u2060lines\u201d.<\/p>\n

The group would continue its armed resistance, he added: \u201cWe did not leave the battlefield in the most difficult circumstances, and we will not leave it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lebanon\u2019s state news agency said an Israeli drone struck Nabatieh al-Fawqa on Saturday. The area is outside the security zone shown on a map published by Israel of the territory its troops will continue to control.<\/p>\n

The \u200cIsraeli military told Reuters it had carried out the strike, using \u200ba drone because it had no troops in the \u200cimmediate area. It said it targeted \u2060an individual who posed a threat to its forces, without giving \u2060further details or evidence.<\/p>\n

Qassem said the Iran-U.S. memorandum of understanding reached earlier this month, \u200cwhich guarantees Lebanon\u2019s territorial integrity, \u200bshould serve as the basis \u200cfor ending the conflict, rather than Friday\u2019s \u200bWashington agreement. <\/p>\n
