\u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d launched a worldwide phenomenon when it first premiered in November 2025. But despite the TV series\u2019 massive popularity, it won\u2019t be taking home any awards when the 78th Emmy Awards airs this September.<\/p>\n

The Television Academy announced its full list of nominees for the upcoming awards show on July 8. Each year, there are always surprises and snubs. But one of the hottest series of the 2025-2026 season is already guaranteed to be excluded from the list, and it comes down to the Emmy Awards specific eligibility rules.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

According to the , foreign television production is ineligible \u201cunless it is the result of a co-production (both financially and creatively) between U.S. and foreign partners, which precedes the start of production, and with a purpose to be shown on U.S. television.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHeated Rivalry,\u201d based on Canadian author Rachel Reid\u2019s 2019 romantic hockey novel of the same name, was produced in Canada. The TV adaptation, which was first announced in June 2025, is original to Crave, a Canadian streamer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a Canadian book. We\u2019re Canadian producers,\u201d creator Jacob Tierney told \u201cCBS Mornings\u201d in February.<\/p>\n

The show was able to air in the U.S. when, nine days before its November premiere, HBO Max announced it had acquired the rights.<\/p>\n

According to IMDB, the show\u2019s country of origin is Canada. The website lists multiple production companies behind the show, including Bell Media, Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund, Accent Aigu Entertainment, Canada Media Fund, Crave and Sphere Abacus.<\/p>\n

Tierney and \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d co-creator Brendan Brady appeared on NPR\u2019s \u201cPlanet Money\u201d in February 2026 to discuss the show and its production process. Brady said the show was \u201cmade in the Canadian system,\u201d which he described as \u201cvery different from the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d is eligible for the International Emmy Awards, per The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, which will be held on Nov. 23, 2026, in New York City. Nominees will be announced in September.<\/p>\n

Per the award\u2019s website, the International Emmy Awards feature 16 award categories.<\/p>\n

Even though \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d isn\u2019t eligible for the Emmy Awards, it has already won multiple accolades. At the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards, the show took home 16 awards including best drama series and best lead performer, drama series, for Hudson Williams.<\/p>\n
