Ministry leader Victor Marx has won the Republican primary for governor of Colorado, NBC News projects, setting up a general election matchup with state Attorney General Phil Weiser, the Democratic nominee.<\/p>\n

Marx narrowly defeated Republican state Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer after a protracted count of the final votes following the June 30 primary. Marx took 39.9% of the GOP primary vote, while Kirkmeyer took 39.4%.<\/p>\n

A third Republican candidate, state Rep. Scott Bottoms, finished in a distant third place.<\/p>\n

Marx, a former Marine and the founder of an evangelical ministry, gained wider notice earlier this year after a controversial interview.<\/p>\n

Marx has long claimed that an abusive stepfather forced him to kill a man when Marx was only 7 years old.<\/p>\n

That assertion recently resurfaced in a May interview with Denver\u2019s KUSA, an NBC affiliate, during which Marx said he\u2019d also possibly murdered other people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in other situations where, possibly, people or persons died as a result of me defending myself in other countries,\u201d Marx said.<\/p>\n

The reporter interviewing him replied: \u201cDo you think that you\u2019ve killed people as an adult?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes it matter,\u201d Marx responded.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear whether Marx\u2019s claims in that interview came in reference to his time in the military <\/p>\n

Marx\u2019s campaign website says he endured a troubled childhood \u2014 including being the victim of sexual abuse \u2014 before turning his life around in the Marines.<\/p>\n

He says his \u200bAll Things Possible Ministries has rescued women and children held in captivity, including one particularly daring mission rescuing kidnapped girls from ISIS territory.<\/p>\n

Marx enters the general election as the underdog in the race against Weiser, as they vie to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Jared Polis. Colorado voters have not elected a Republican governor in more than two decades. <\/p>\n

Weiser, a two-term state attorney general and a former University of Colorado Law School dean, beat Sen. Michael Bennet in the Democratic primary, in a campaign that centered on an anti-Trump and anti-establishment message.<\/p>\n
