CHICAGO \u2014 Civil rights leaders announced plans for a Washington march \u200cto defend voting rights, saying on Tuesday that recent court decisions have weakened key federal protections against racial discrimination in voting.<\/p>\n

The coalition \u2014 led by Rev. Al Sharpton\u2019s National Action Network and joined by Martin Luther King III, Arndrea Waters \u200bKing, and labor and civil rights groups \u2014 will host the \u201cMarch on Washington 2026: Defend the \u200bVote\u201d march on August 28. <\/p>\n

That will mark the 63rd anniversary of \u2060the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s \u201cI Have a \u200bDream\u201d speech.<\/p>\n

Organizers said they hope to use the event to pressure lawmakers and rally a response \u200bto the erosion of voting protections.<\/p>\n

The campaign centers on the Supreme Court\u2019s April ruling weakening Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a key provision used to challenge voting laws and electoral maps that discriminate on the basis \u200bof race or dilute minority voting power. Organizers said the decision has intensified a long-running \u200bfight over Black political representation.<\/p>\n

Some Republicans defended the court\u2019s decision, arguing that race-conscious redistricting is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

Sharpton, however, called the \u200cruling \u201ca \u2060bullet in the heart of the voting rights movement,\u201d underscoring the stakes civil rights advocates see surrounding the court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

The march follows a Wall Street demonstration last year that drew hundreds to downtown Manhattan to protest against what they said was corporate America\u2019s retreat from diversity, equity and \u200binclusion initiatives under pressure \u200bfrom the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefending \u2060the vote means defending the foundation of our democracy,\u201d Martin Luther King III said in a statement. \u201cSixty-three years after my father stood at the \u200bLincoln Memorial, we are called to march again, not only in remembrance, \u200bbut in \u2060action.\u201d<\/p>\n

The coalition includes the Drum Major Institute, the American Federation of Teachers, the American Federation of Government Employees, the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women, the National Urban League, the League of \u2060United Latin \u200bAmerican Citizens and the Working Families Party. U.S. Representative \u200bYvette Clarke, a New York Democrat who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus, is expected to attend with other members of Congress, \u200bthe organizers said in a release.<\/p>\n
