Boris Nadezhdin, a Russian anti-war politician \u200bwho had hoped to stand in parliamentary elections later this year, has announced he is ending his role in opposition politics \u2060for now, blaming what he said were politically-motivated legal setbacks.<\/p>\n

Nadezhdin, 63, a former liberal lawmaker, has been an outspoken critic of Moscow\u2019s war in Ukraine but \u2014 \u2060like some other opposition \u200bpoliticians \u2014 had tried \u2060to work within the rules of Russia\u2019s tightly-controlled political system to be able to \u2060continue to voice his views publicly.<\/p>\n

In a \u200bstatement, \u2060Nadezhdin said he had \u200cran out of political road however, after a series of setbacks. He received a small fine \u200con Friday for displaying \u201cextremist symbols\u201d \u200cand was this month designated a \u201cforeign agent\u201d by the justice ministry.<\/p>\n

Both rulings disqualified him from running for the \u2060State Duma, the lower house of parliament, in September elections, his statement \u2014 issued on Sunday \u2014 said. He said he had also been banned from leaving Russia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are silencing me, forcing me out of politics and making my life extremely difficult,\u201d \u200cNadezhdin said. \u201cFor me, the possibilities for legally \u200bengaging in opposition politics in Russia have \u200cbeen exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pro-Kremlin politicians accuse \u2060the West of trying to destabilise Russia \u2060before the elections and say that some censorship is necessary \u200cto safeguard \u200bnational unity at a \u200ctime when Moscow is locked \u200bin an existential struggle over Ukraine. <\/p>\n
