Christopher Anne Affleck, mother of actors Ben and Casey Affleck, died in June after a monthslong battle with a terminal illness, the family announced July 23. She was 82.<\/p>\n

Affleck, a civil rights organizer and teacher, received her diagnosis in December 2025 and was given six months to live, according to her obituary in The Boston Globe. She passed just after being able to witness one of her biggest ambitions, according to the family.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cHer greatest wish after her diagnosis, however, was to live to see her grandson graduate high school,\u201d the family wrote in the obituary. \u201cShe did so, attending with her family on May 31, 2026. She died peacefully, in her sleep, two days later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Affleck, who was born in New York City in 1942, spent 35 years as a public school teacher in Massachusetts, the obituary said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery student, whether just arrived from Haiti or Cambridge upper crust, was a cherished citizen of her classroom republic, equal to each other and to herself,\u201d the family wrote in the tribute.<\/p>\n

A Harvard graduate, Affleck also spent a large part of her life involved in civil rights movements. During Freedom Summer \u2014 a 1964 summer initiative aimed at raising awareness around violence against the Black community and increasing voter registration and political participation \u2014 Affleck got involved, teaching literacy classes, according to the obituary. An active participant in 1960s counterculture, Affleck also marched against the Vietnam War, the tribute said.<\/p>\n

The family wrote in the obituary that Affleck\u2019s unique, revolutionary spirit was present in her life since childhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the beginning of her life, Chris made her unconventional name her own, foreshadowing both the personality and the practicality that would follow her to her death,\u201d the obituary said.<\/p>\n

Affleck, the commemoration said, grew up idolizing her stepfather Sam, who was a World War II veteran and a civil rights supporter. During her years at all-girls private school Nightingale-Bamford, Affleck \u201cmade the most of an elite education while remaining skeptical of the tightly cloistered world it represented,\u201d the obituary said.<\/p>\n

In one particular instance, the obituary said, a teacher had chastised Affleck for her criticism of Jim Crow \u2014 the laws and policies that enforced racial segregation primarily from 1877 to the mid-1960s \u2014 without hearing the \u201cother side.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe slipped down to a payphone to ask Woolworth\u2019s whether they really did turn Black customers away,\u201d the family wrote, referencing the now-defunct chain retail store. \u201cThat was Chris: always willing to acknowledge that she might be wrong and never letting that uncertainty be an excuse for inaction.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also had a sense of humor, proudly wearing a typo from her first email address that dubbed her \u201cChritopher\u201d and embraced it twenty years, the obituary said.<\/p>\n

Later on, it was Affleck\u2019s five grandchildren \u2014 Indiana, 22, Violet, 20, Atticus, 18, Fin, 17, and Sam, 12 \u2014 that became the \u201canimating force\u201d in her life, the family said in the obituary.<\/p>\n

\u201cChris was suitably proud of her descendants\u2019 achievements, but she was delighted when they questioned, defied, or cleverly engaged authority,\u201d the tribute said.<\/p>\n

Affleck, who retired in 2008, remained involved in advocacy and organizing. She volunteered on the Barack Obama campaign trail, the obituary said. Shortly afterwards, she traveled to Palestine and, upon her return, became an organizer with the coalition group Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine, the family wrote. She was also a founding board member of the Sustainable Cape Project in Truro, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen her granddaughter\u2019s student activist group needed a space for trainings, she invited them to Truro and attended every single workshop herself, taking notes,\u201d the obituary said.<\/p>\n

Even after her diagnosis, Affleck continued her social justice work, the commemoration pointed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe called her friend, Josh Laub, to take oral histories of his time as a principal in the South Bronx,\u201d the obituary said.<\/p>\n

Ben Affleck has previously opened up about his love for his mother, sharing in an interview with Vanity Fair that he and friend and fellow actor Matt Damon were intent on bringing their beloved moms to their first Academy Awards experience in 1998. While Ben Affleck said that some felt the moment was quite unique, he told the outlet that bringing his loved one to the Oscars felt like a natural choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were sitting next to our moms and we won, and we kind of hugged our moms,\u201d Affleck told the magazine. \u201cAnd I remember, how everyone had made such a big thing out of it. As if this was such a novelty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I remember thinking, being insecure, like, \u2018Why? Why is it weird that we\u2019re bringing our moms?\u2019\u201d he continued. \u201cLike, \u2018Who else do you think we would bring?\u2019 You know what I mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

Affleck added that there was \u201cnobody else that was going to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was it. Of course our moms were gonna go,\u201d he said. \u201cThat really was innocent and not faked.\u201d <\/p>\n
