The president on Friday ordered that \u201cwarning\u201d signs be placed in front of the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of American History to inform visitors of the \u201cinaccurate information presented in the Museum.\u201d <\/p>\n

The executive order comes after a White House report released July 4 claimed the museum \u201ccannot be trusted to tell America\u2019s story honestly and in a way that is inspiring, unifying, and worthy of our great republic.\u201d <\/p>\n

Trump said in March 2025 that he intended to force changes at the Smithsonian Institution, signing an executive order that sought to target federal funding for programs that present \u201cdivisive narratives\u201d and \u201cimproper ideology.\u201d <\/p>\n

In his order on Friday, Trump wrote that the \u201cSmithsonian leadership does not present American history as a shared national inheritance to be taught and celebrated, but instead views American history as a \u2018prime tool\u2019 to advance ideas of social justice and the radical transformation of our society.\u201d <\/p>\n

He wrote that the leadership of both the institution and of the museum \u201ccannot be trusted to tell America\u2019s story with honesty and gratitude.\u201d <\/p>\n

Trump directed Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum to work alongside the National Park Service to install \u201ctemporary signage along the NPS-maintained sidewalks and walkways used by the public to access the Museum.\u201d <\/p>\n

The signage will \u201cinform visitors\u201d of the July 4 report and Trump\u2019s demand that the report findings be enforced in accordance with his March 2025 executive order, Trump wrote. <\/p>\n

Trump said that the signage will correct \u201cinaccurate information presented in the Museum\u201d and direct visitors to \u201clocations and resources for accurate information regarding America\u2019s history.\u201d <\/p>\n

The president directed that Burgum, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and the administrator of General Services alongside the assistant to the president for domestic policy shall \u201cuse all available authorities\u201d to promote the order\u2019s policies. <\/p>\n

The Smithsonian declined to comment on Friday.<\/p>\n

Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch defended the institution\u2019s work in an email to NBC News earlier this month, writing that the White House\u2019s report \u201cis not a fair characterization of the work and totality of the National Museum of American History.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the Smithsonian, our work is driven by scholarship, accuracy and an uncompromising commitment to tell the fullness of America\u2019s story,\u201d Bunch wrote. <\/p>\n

He added that the institution remains \u201cfocused on what grounds us: a steadfast commitment to scholarship, nonpartisanship, independence, accuracy, and integrity.\u201d <\/p>\n
