The Iran war \u200bbroadened over the weekend despite a pause in U.S. strikes, as Yemen\u2019s Iran-aligned Houthis attacked Saudi oil installations along the Red Sea coast and Iran \u200caccused Ukraine of targeting one of its vessels in the Caspian Sea.<\/p>\n

The U.S. military said on Saturday its naval blockade against Iran \u201cremains in full effect\u201d but did not explain why it halted a streak of 13 nights of escalating strikes.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There were also no weekend reports of attacks by Iran on neighbors, similar to its daily rejoinders to the U.S. attacks.<\/p>\n

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told NBC News\u2019 Meet the Press that a pause in strikes was due to ongoing talks between the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the president is doing right now, as we\u2019ve seen all along, is giving some talks, some space,\u201d he said. \u201cTalks are ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Waltz added that, while talks were ongoing at the highest levels of the Iranian and U.S. governments, there was \u201cinternal fighting\u201d on the Iranian side. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cSome are seeking the guidance of the supreme leader,\u201d he said. \u201cOthers want to move into a different direction, and that makes it hugely challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran \u200bwill halt its own attacks as long as the United \u2060States maintains its pause on strikes, but Tehran remains sceptical of U.S. \u2060intentions, a \u200bsenior Iranian source told Reuters on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran\u2019s \u2060position remains \u2018attack for attack\u2019: \u200bif \u2060the attacks stop, \u200cIran will also halt its operations. That message \u200chas already been conveyed \u200cto the United States,\u201d the source told Reuters, \u2060a day after Washington halted attacks following 13 successive nights of air strikes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is more scepticism than optimism about \u200cthe halt in attacks. \u200bThe prevailing view \u200cis that \u2060the pause is \u2060tactical rather than genuine,\u201d the \u200csource added.<\/p>\n

Trump has decided, for now, to back away from plans to ramp up attacks on Iran, \u2060the New York Times said on Saturday, citing two people briefed on the discussion.<\/p>\n

The president and his advisers, the newspaper said, have concerns about expanding the conflict, depleting \u200bdefense stockpiles, alienating Middle East Gulf allies and affecting energy supplies and the global economy.<\/p>\n

Vice President JD Vance and Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, \u200bboth raised concerns about the U.S. munitions stockpile with Trump during a White House meeting on Friday, a U.S. official told CNN.<\/p>\n

Operations are \u201con a hold,\u201d a Department of Defense source told the broadcaster on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Despite the Gulf lull, Saturday\u2019s fighting between Iran\u2019s Houthi allies and Saudi Arabia showed that the war, which has already disrupted energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, could affect a second major \u200bshipping route and reignite Yemen\u2019s civil war.<\/p>\n

Separately, Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, saying one sailor was killed and another injured.<\/p>\n

The \u200bministry summoned Ukraine\u2019s charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires in Tehran to protest over an attack it described as \u201chostile and criminal\u201d, state news agency IRNA said.<\/p>\n

The Iranian denunciation coincided with comments by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Kyiv had \u200cnoted Russia \u2060was passing on to Iran its satellite observations in the Middle East, to enable it to direct strikes in the region.<\/p>\n

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group struck sites belonging to Saudi state oil company Aramco in the cities of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday.<\/p>\n

A large column of smoke rose from the direction of the Aramco refinery in Jizan, near the Yemeni border, video on social media verified by Reuters showed. The refinery can process up to 400,000 barrels of crude oil \u200bdaily.<\/p>\n

Two Asia-based trading sources said they had been \u200binformed of potential damage to fuel \u2060and oil storage sites at Jizan. Aramco did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

In Yanbu, two missiles aimed at oil installations were intercepted. Yanbu, Saudi Arabia\u2019s main Red Sea oil port, has become a key route for Saudi oil skirting the Strait of Hormuz, \u200bwhich Iran has blockaded.<\/p>\n

In Yemen, officials said the air force of the Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government, which has \u200bopposed the Houthis for \u2060more than a decade, struck Houthi sites in the Marib and al-Jawf provinces.<\/p>\n

The officials said both sides in Yemen\u2019s civil war were mobilizing forces along the front.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia has led an Arab coalition battling the Houthis since the Iran-aligned fighters captured Yemen\u2019s capital, Sanaa.<\/p>\n

The civil war, in which famine and fighting killed hundreds of thousands, has been paused by a ceasefire since \u20602022.<\/p>\n

But that \u200btruce broke down this month, with the Houthis effectively joining the wider war their Iranian allies have \u200bwaged since being attacked by the United States and Israel five months ago.<\/p>\n

The Houthis have declared a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia over the past week, and Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said all Saudi oil \u200bfacilities could be targets.<\/p>\n
