SINGAPORE \u2014 The British band Massive Attack said its members were detained by Singapore police and \u201cisolated and separately questioned\u201d after two performers raised a Palestinian flag at their concert in the city-state last Wednesday.<\/p>\n

In a statement posted on Instagram on Sunday, the band said they were \u201csurprised and disappointed\u201d that the entire band was detained and questioned.<\/p>\n

Several members had their hotel rooms searched and passports temporarily confiscated, the post said.<\/p>\n

Singapore police did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters regarding the band\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n

The trip-hop band has two members, Robert Del Naja and Grant Marshall, both British nationals, who unfurled the flag and held it up as the audience cheered \u201cFree Palestine,\u201d a Reuters witness said.<\/p>\n

Police said last Friday that the band\u2019s actions \u201ccould potentially harm the racial and religious harmony in Singapore\u201d and that two band members were issued with stern warnings \u200band barred from re-entering Singapore. Police did not name the two band members.<\/p>\n

The band did not say who among the members were detained and whose rooms were searched or passports confiscated.<\/p>\n

Massive Attack was performing with a live backing band and guest vocalists, including Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did not imagine that merely holding up the flag of a sovereign state recognized by 157 countries (Palestine) would violate any law,\u201d the band\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe surreal experience was a reminder of the importance of defending universal human rights and freedom of expression wherever those rights are threatened,\u201d the band said.<\/p>\n

Singapore does not allow the public display of foreign national emblems \u200bwithout a permit or exemption, and the Palestinian flag is especially sensitive \u200bgiven the conflict in Gaza and Singapore\u2018s Muslim population.<\/p>\n

Singapore has an ethnically and religiously diverse population of about 6.11 million, of whom around 15% of the citizens and permanent residents are Muslim.<\/p>\n

Massive Attack, formed in Bristol in the west of England in 1988, are known for their outspoken political stances, with videos during their \u2060concert \u200bhighlighting conflicts in Iran, Sudan, Gaza and Ukraine.<\/p>\n
