BUCHAREST \u2014 An F-18 fighter on a NATO air policing mission shot down a drone that illegally breached Romanian national airspace, the fourth unmanned aircraft shot down over \u2060the country this year, Romania\u2019s defence ministry said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for NATO\u2019s military headquarters, U.S. Army Colonel Martin O\u2019Donnell, said the alliance is constantly on watch and prepared to defend itself from any \u2060threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditional details regarding Sunday\u2019s incident \u200bremain \u2060under investigation, but the drone appears to be Russian,\u201d he said. NATO member Romania shares a 381-\u2060mile land border with Ukraine and has reported repeated breaches of \u200bits \u2060airspace by Russian drones over \u200cthe past four years, as well as mines floating in the Black Sea across key trade and energy routes.<\/p>\n

Romania\u2019s defence \u200cministry did not specify the origin \u200cof the drone, saying it was detected by radar as it entered the country from neighbouring Moldova, north of the southeastern Romanian city of \u2060Galati.<\/p>\n

The F-18 jet, part of a Spanish NATO contingent deployed in Romania, \u201cmade radar contact with the target and received permission to engage\u201d, the ministry said in a statement, adding that the drone was shot down safely at 5:01 a.m.<\/p>\n

The ministry said that fragments from the destroyed drone appeared to have fallen \u200cin an uninhabited area between two villages.<\/p>\n

Moscow hit in Ukrainian strikes<\/h2>\n

Ukrainian drones struck Moscow region overnight on Sunday in what the provincial \u200bgovernor said was one of the largest \u200cattacks to have targeted the region, and which he said had left at least one person \u200bdead.<\/p>\n

In posts on Telegram, Moscow region Governor \u200bAndrei Vorobyov said that an 83-year-old man \u2060had been killed, with several more injured \u200bin Podolsk, where he said a warehouse \u200bbelonging to Russia\u2019s largest online retailer Wildberries had been struck.<\/p>\n

He said damage had been caused at several other \u200bsites, including at a warehouse in the \u200btown of Domodedovo, close to one of Moscow\u2019s main \u200cairports.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s \u2060Defence Ministry said it had downed 822 Ukrainian drones throughout the country.<\/p>\n

Video filmed by Reuters of the aftermath of the strike on \u200bWildberries\u2019 Koledino \u200bwarehouse showed \u2060a large plume of smoke over the site, around 45 km (28 \u200bmiles) south of Moscow.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has been \u200btargeting \u2060Wildberries, which it accuses of handling military goods, in recent weeks as part of a wider \u2060bid \u200bto damage Russian economic \u200binfrastructure it sees as underpinning Moscow\u2019s military campaign.<\/p>\n

Russia attacks Kyiv overnight<\/h2>\n

Russian \u200bforces launched missile and drone attacks \u200con Kyiv early on Sunday, sparking fires in at least two districts of Ukraine\u2019s capital, \u200bMayor Vitali Klitschko said.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s \u200bmilitary administration said three people had been \u2060injured.<\/p>\n

Klitschko, writing on the Telegram messaging \u200bapp, said that falling debris had caused \u200ba fire in a non-residential part of a northern suburb.<\/p>\n

Several cars were on fire and another \u200bfire had broken out in an \u200barea just south of the city centre, he \u200csaid.<\/p>\n

Reuters \u2060witnesses reported explosions in the city.<\/p>\n

Tymur Tkachenko, Governor of the Kyiv region, reported that three more people, including a child, \u200bwere injured \u200bas a \u2060result of drone attacks across the region.<\/p>\n

Russia has in recent weeks been staging \u2060intensive \u200bair attacks on Kyiv \u200band other Ukrainian cities.<\/p>\n
