British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Tuesday that he\u2019s not embarrassed about exchanging messages with someone who impersonated President Donald Trump\u2019s White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles. <\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I\u2019m not, because there was a minimal exchange, nothing of consequence, and actually, quickly I realized that this needed to be reported, and I did so,\u201d Burnham told reporters.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cI handled it in the right way,\u201d he added. \u201cAll politicians are receiving these pressures and these challenges, but I did everything right. There was a minimal exchange of information of zero consequence, and it was quickly reported.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burnham\u2019s Downing Street office pointed NBC News to the remarks when reached for comment. <\/p>\n

Politico first reported the incident Monday, citing four anonymous officials. It\u2019s unclear when the exchanges occurred or on what messaging platform. Burnham took over as prime minister on July 20. When reached for comment Monday, a Downing Street spokesperson told NBC News, \u201cWe do not comment on national security matters.\u201d <\/p>\n

A member of the U.K. Parliament, Liberal Democrat James MacCleary, wrote a letter to Parliament\u2019s Intelligence and Security Committee on Tuesday calling for an investigation \u201cinto how such a dangerous security breach could be allowed to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump appeared to be unaware of the situation when asked about it Monday in the Oval Office. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure that he had a miscommunication,\u201d Trump said. The president spoke to Burnham just after he took office and said in a Truth Social post in July, \u201cWe will be meeting in the not too distant future for topics of mutual interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Politico\u2019s report said people within U.K.\u2019s government were worried that Wiles\u2019 phone was hacked, as it had been previously. The report noted that the Wall Street Journal reported last year that Wiles told associates her cellphone contacts were hacked. <\/p>\n

A White House official confirmed to NBC News at the time that U.S. officials were investigating an effort to impersonate Wiles after an unknown person reached out to prominent Republicans and business executives pretending to be her.<\/p>\n

Reached for comment about the latest incident involving Burnham, a White House official told NBC News, \u201cThis incident had nothing to do with the Chief of Staff\u2019s devices being hacked.\u201d<\/p>\n
