{"id":4157,"date":"2026-08-19T16:09:40","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T16:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trustedmovinggroups.com\/?p=4157"},"modified":"2026-08-19T16:09:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T16:09:40","slug":"judge-removed-from-texas-track-meet-stabbing-case-as-defendant-karmelo-anthony-seeks-a-new-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trustedmovinggroups.com\/?p=4157","title":{"rendered":"Judge removed from Texas track meet stabbing case as defendant Karmelo Anthony seeks a new trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>McKINNEY, Texas \u2014 The trial judge who presided over the case of Texas teenager convicted of fatally stabbing a 17-year-old athlete at a high school track meet was ordered removed from the case as the defendant seeks a new trial and appeals his conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/trustedmovinggroups.com\/?p=4156\">Bond yields plunge after Treasury announces surprise move to ease rising rates<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Karmelo Anthony, now 19, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison after a suburban Dallas jury in June rejected his claims of self-defense during a confrontation with Austin Metcalf in the stadium bleachers last year.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Anthony\u2019s legal team argued Wednesday that a retrial was warranted in part because state District Judge John Roach enforced overly strict courtroom rules and gave an interview after the trial was over.<\/p>\n<p>A new judge will be assigned for Thursday\u2019s hearing on the retrial request.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony attended the hearing in Collin County wearing a green jump suit. His parents and Metcalf\u2019s parents also were in the courtroom.<\/p>\n<p>The case attracted attention in part because of a flood of social media posts that amplified the killing in racial terms. Anthony is Black; Metcalf was white. Lawyers on both sides, however, told jurors the tragedy had nothing to do with race.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>After the order to remove Roach, Anthony supporters cheered the courthouse hallways and outside the building.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/trustedmovinggroups.com\/?p=4154\">Merck and Moderna say cancer vaccine shows promise in preventing recurrence of melanoma<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anthony did not testify during the trial.<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, students described a heated exchange over Anthony\u2019s refusal on a rainy spring day to leave a tent that belonged to Metcalf\u2019s team. The teens went to different high schools.<\/p>\n<p>Several schools were competing when Anthony sat under the Memorial High School tent that was perched in the bleachers.
