A Colorado man accused of killing his wife claimed she had been suffering from postpartum depression and cut her own throat \u2014 an explanation police quickly disputed before arresting him, authorities said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Patrick Barnett, a 40-year-old Lakewood resident, was charged with first-degree murder, tampering with a deceased body and tampering with physical evidence, the First Judicial District Attorney\u2019s Office announced.<\/p>\n

Lindsey Barnett, 37, was found with her throat slit in the shower stall of the couple\u2019s Lakewood home on Aug. 13, according to an arrest affidavit prepared by Detective Victoria Wagner.<\/p>\n

Patrick Barnett called 911 at 6:01 a.m. that day and \u201cindicated that his wife\u201d had \u201ccut herself and her throat,\u201d the affidavit said.<\/p>\n

But investigators were immediately doubtful of his account. Crime scene investigators found \u201ca large amount of blood on the right side of the bedsheets, pillow\u201d and \u201cblood clots all over predominantly the right side of the bed,\u201d according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n

\u201cA trail of blood was running from the right side of the bed to the bathroom but\u201d investigators \u201cindicated to me that there was not a lot of blood in the bathroom to speak of,\u201d Wagner wrote.<\/p>\n

Police also found that Patrick Barnett had a \u201cnew or fresh cut to his right thumb\u201d along with \u201cfresh scratches on his right upper arm near his arm pit that follow down to part of his chest,\u201d the affidavit said.<\/p>\n

He also \u201cscratches to the bottom right side of his abdomen and a new or fresh scratch mark just below his collar bone,\u201d the document states.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese scratches mentioned above are consistent with fingernail scratches that are consistent with being defensive wounds,\u201d police concluded.<\/p>\n

In his initial interview with police, the suspect admitted that he and the victim had been struggling in their marriage. Lindsey Barnett had suffered from postpartum depression, her husband allegedly told police.<\/p>\n

The victim\u2019s mother, Donna Ott, told police that her daughter, a teacher, had suffered with depression but \u201cnever expressed suicidal thoughts and never had suicide attempts,\u201d according to the affidavit. Ott said \u201cLindsey loved her children an was making plans for the school year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple had two children \u2014 ages 3 and an infant \u2014 who were not injured, police said.<\/p>\n

Patrick Barnett insisted to investigators that he and his wife were working to repair their marriage. \u201cHe was asked about infidelity by either him or Lindsey and he said there was no infidelity,\u201d the affidavit states.<\/p>\n

Hours after Lindsey Barnett\u2019s body was found, police received a call from a woman claiming to be Patrick\u2019s girlfriend, asking for a welfare check, police said. She told police she hadn\u2019t heard from him since 11 p.m. the previous night, which she said was unusual since the two texted constantly, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n

When police arrested Patrick Barnett at 7:10 p.m. that day and confronted him about the girlfriend, he allegedly confirmed he had been seeing another woman. The two had met online three months earlier and bonded over their shared involvement in the ultimate frisbee community, police said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe admitted he had a relationship\u201d outside of marriage but claimed \u201cLindsey knew about it and was fine with it,\u201d the affidavit said.<\/p>\n

Patrick Barnett was assigned a public defender, prosecutors said; a representative for that office could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday. Barnett is scheduled to appear before a Jefferson County judge on Friday.<\/p>\n
