Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is medically fit and back in jail after being examined by a team of doctors in a hospital overnight, the country\u2019s information minister said Friday, a move that had not been widely anticipated after Khan was allowed to leave prison to have his health checked for the first time since February.<\/p>\n

Khan, 73, was transferred to a hospital during the intervening night of Aug. 20 and 21 for \u200bmedical examination, following a Supreme Court order this week, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

His supporters lined the streets of the capital, Islamabad, overnight, showering flowers on the vehicle widely believed to be carrying him to the hospital. Aired live on Pakistani television, the images stood in stark contrast to how the country\u2019s broadcasters had covered Khan in recent years, tending to not even cite the highly popular cricketer-turned-politician\u2019s name until Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Public perception that Khan was moved back to prison forcefully by authorities could spark new outrage among his supporters and potentially escalate tensions and street protests.<\/p>\n

Khan\u2019s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, did not immediately comment on the claim that he was medically fit. Senior party members had publicly interpreted the Supreme Court order as meaning Khan would remain hospitalized at least for several weeks.<\/p>\n

But Pakistan\u2019s minister for parliamentary affairs, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, told ARY News on Thursday that \u201cif doctors decide that his treatment at the hospital is necessary, he will be admitted. If they opine that he can be treated in jail, he will be sent back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist and a physician, conducted a detailed examination of him and declared him medically fit,\u201d Tarar said Friday morning.<\/p>\n

In its order on Tuesday, the Supreme Court told authorities to transfer Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days and \u2060allow him access to a medical panel that includes his personal physician.<\/p>\n

Tarar said Khan had been examined at the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital, rather than the private Shifa International Hospital, due to a \u201csecurity situation created by PTI workers\u201d along the planned route.<\/p>\n

The PTI did not immediately comment. It had told journalists in a statement overnight that Khan had arrived at Shifa International Hospital.<\/p>\n

His sister Uzma Khan was present during the examination, Tarar said, and Khan was transferred back to Adiala jail in the garrison city of Rawalpindi at 5 a.m. (8 p.m. Thursday ET).<\/p>\n

Khan has been \u2060imprisoned since \u200bAugust 2023. He says the cases against \u200bhim are politically motivated, an accusation the government denies.<\/p>\n

His lawyers say his health has deteriorated in prison \u200cand \u2060that he has lost significant vision in his right eye. The government has said medical reports disclosed no condition requiring immediate treatment.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari called the ruling a \u201cnew ray of hope\u201d but said the party would proceed with a nationwide march on Sept. 27 to demand access to Khan, speedy hearings in his cases and his release.<\/p>\n
