Iran\u2019s foreign minister dismissed the threat of new U.S. sanctions as a sign of desperation on Sunday and said the expected new measures would fail to defeat Tehran.<\/p>\n

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is \u2060due to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. ET on Monday, has threatened to impose \u201cthe toughest sanctions in history\u201d on Iran.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s economy is already under huge pressure from international sanctions, its infrastructure has been hit repeatedly and thousands of people have been killed in airstrikes on the Islamic Republic since the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on February 28.<\/p>\n

But Tehran remains defiant after nearly six months of war and has brought shipping to a virtual standstill in \u2060the Strait of Hormuz, refusing to allow unauthorized oil tankers to transit a waterway \u200bthat \u2060is vital for global oil shipments. The effective blockade of the strait has pushed up global oil prices.<\/p>\n

Describing what he said were \u201crepetitive scenarios\u201d, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a video posted on Telegram: \u201cThe fact that they (U.S. leaders) have \u2060moved on from military operations … to bring up the same old plans shows that they are desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Washington must speak \u200bto Iran \u2060respectfully to find \u201ca solution based on justice and \u200chonor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have never been afraid. All of their actions – whether blockades or other military moves they have made – have failed, and this new issue of theirs will fail as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of economic consequences against any country that \u200cprovides \u201cany type of lifeline to Iran\u201d and Bessent has urged cooperation with Washington by China, \u200cwhich buys more than 80% of Iran\u2019s shipped oil, according to 2025 data from analytics firm Kpler. China has urged diplomacy.<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s army chief to visit Tehran<\/h2>\n

Iran said Pakistan\u2019s army chief, Asim Munir, would visit Tehran on Monday as part of efforts to restore peace and security in the region, but gave few details.<\/p>\n

Pakistan has been mediating in \u2060the conflict and a Pakistani government source said Munir would touch on recent developments including the U.S. threat of new sanctions.<\/p>\n

Trump said on Friday that Washington was observing \u201cwhat happens\u201d in the conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would love to make a deal, but they\u2019re not ready to make the right deal, in my opinion,\u201d Trump said of Iran.<\/p>\n

U.S. attacks have severely diminished Iran\u2019s economy and devastated its navy and air force, but Tehran maintains enough missile and drone capability to impede oil tanker traffic and attack regional rivals.<\/p>\n

Iranian Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Saturday that Tehran had received \u201cnumerous messages\u201d from neighbouring countries about establishing new regional security arrangements and economic cooperation.<\/p>\n

Ghalibaf did not say which countries he \u200cwas referring to. He accused the U.S. of endangering the security of its allies in the region for the sake \u200bof Israel, adding that an independent, \u201chomegrown\u201d regional order would deliver peace and security.<\/p>\n

Trump has yet to achieve objectives \u200che set at the start of the war such as dismantling \u2060Iran\u2019s nuclear program \u2014 the state of which remains uncertain given that U.N. inspectors have been shut out since 2025 \u2014 and creating \u2060conditions for Iranians to overthrow their clerical rulers.<\/p>\n

While Iran remains defiant, President Masoud Pezeshkian has also called for a diplomatic solution.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be better to end the war \u200ctoday, when we are powerful and have dignity, \u200band the whole world acknowledges our victory and emphasizes that America, \u200ccontrary to all regulations, attacked our schools, hospitals, and infrastructure and is \u200bhated in the world,\u201d the ISNA news agency quoted him as saying on Friday.<\/p>\n
