This weekend, A24\u2019s \u201cBackrooms\u201d \u2014 from 20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons \u2014 grossed a record-breaking $81.4 million in North America and $118 million worldwide, shattering the record for the largest opening ever for a first-time director with an original film.<\/p>\n

The trend points to a new force in indie horror: YouTubers and online creators with built-in fan bases that studios are eager to reach.<\/p>\n

\u201cHorror has always created a special connection between creators and audiences,\u201d said Adam Lowenstein, director of the Horror Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh. \u201cThe YouTube generation understands that language.\u201d<\/p>\n

The horror genre has long been a low-budget launching pad for filmmakers, from Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s 1963 B-movie \u201cDementia 13\u201d and George A. Romero\u2019s \u201cNight of the Living Dead\u201d in 1968 to today\u2019s online creator-driven projects.<\/p>\n
