Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., deleted a homophobic comment he posted from his official congressional X account on Tuesday and blamed a staffer for posting it following backlash from Democrats and some Republicans.<\/p>\n

The now-deleted post, which came at the beginning of Pride Month, read: \u201cHomosexuality has no place in America. Happy Nuclear Family Month.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ogles later said on X that \u201ca member of my comms team\u201d sent the post. \u201cThe post was stupid, hurtful and a complete distraction from my America First focus. The employee has been reprimanded,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Fellow Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, N.Y., was among those who condemned Ogles over the post, calling it \u201cidiotic.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHomosexuality exists. In America. In fact Andy, you have family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and constituents who are gay and lesbian,\u201d Lawler wrote on X. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t make them less than or somehow unworthy of being an American. What an absolutely idiotic statement to make.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawler told NBC News on Tuesday that he also sent Ogles some \u201cchoice words\u201d via text message. <\/p>\n

Lawler wasn\u2019t the only Republican to disagree with Ogles. Asked by TMZ whether he agreed with the post, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said, \u201cFor all of recorded history, homosexuals have been part of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m quite libertarian by nature,\u201d he continued. \u201cI think the behavior of consenting adults is their business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democrats slammed the post, with Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass., writing in a post that \u201cbigots like Andy Ogles have no place in America.\u201d Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., also weighed in, calling it a \u201chorrific and disgusting thing to say.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe LGBTQI+ community makes America great, unlike bigots like you,\u201d Thanedar said in a post. <\/p>\n

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday about Ogles\u2019 post.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time Ogles has come under fire for inflammatory remarks. Earlier this year, Ogles declared that \u201cMuslims don\u2019t belong in American society,\u201d which also prompted bipartisan backlash.<\/p>\n

Polling has indicated that Republicans\u2019 support for same-sex marriage and relationships has decreased in recent years. In 2021, 55% of Republicans said that marriages between same-sex couples should be recognized, according to a Gallup poll. In 2026, that number dropped to 37% of Republicans. <\/p>\n
