President Donald Trump injected fresh uncertainty over the status and future of the \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund Wednesday, a day after acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the Justice Department would no longer pursue the $1.8 billion fund, which has sparked bipartisan blowback.<\/p>\n

Asked in the Oval Office whether the fund was dead or just on hold, Trump responded: \u201cI\u2019d have to ask the lawyers. I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe weaponization fund, as far as I\u2019m concerned, was a beautiful thing,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cI love it. I think it\u2019s so important.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration signaled Monday that it was going to back off creating the fund after a federal judge temporarily blocked it. The Justice Department said in a statement Monday that while it \u201cdisagrees strongly with the decision,\u201d it will \u201cabide by the Court\u2019s ruling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pressed about the matter Tuesday, Blanche said at a congressional hearing that the Justice Department was \u201cnot moving forward with the fund, period.\u201d He declined to put the commitment in writing.<\/p>\n

After Trump\u2019s comments Wednesday, his first public remarks about the fund since the Justice Department\u2019s court filing, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., wrote on X: \u201cThis is EXACTLY why @SenateDems will be forcing a vote this week to outlaw Trump\u2019s MAGA slush fund permanently.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Justice Department created the fund last month as part of a settlement between the IRS and Trump, the Trump Organization and two of the president\u2019s sons \u2014 Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump \u2014 after Trump agreed to drop a $10 billion lawsuit he filed against the IRS over his leaked tax documents.<\/p>\n

Both Democrats and Republicans have condemned the fund, which was designed to compensate Trump allies who were \u201cvictims of lawfare and weaponization.\u201d In their early defense of the fund, administration officials did not rule out providing compensation to Jan. 6 rioters pardoned by Trump who were convicted of violently attacking police as they stormed the Capitol.<\/p>\n

Even before Trump\u2019s comments Wednesday, several congressional Democrats warned that they needed to pursue legislation to permanently shut down the fund.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot taking Blanche\u2019s word for it,\u201d Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., wrote Tuesday on X. \u201cCongress must kill this corrupt \u2018anti-weaponization\u2019 slush fund so every Republican is on record.\u201d<\/p>\n
