President Donald Trump said the U.S. will work with Iran to retrieve and destroy its highly enriched uranium if he is able to cut a deal with Tehran to end the three-month-old war between the countries \u2014 or, in the absence of an agreement, that he will further degrade the Iranian military to the point that American forces can safely collect the material on their own.<\/p>

\u201cIf we make a deal that now we\u2019re friendly, we\u2019ll all go together. It\u2019ll be our equipment. We\u2019ll take it out and destroy it, whether it\u2019s on-site or whether we take it off-site,\u201d Trump said in an interview with NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cAnd we will go with them, or without them. But we won\u2019t have people shooting at us, OK?\u201d Trump said. \u201cNow, if we don\u2019t make a deal, then we\u2019re going to take them out militarily very harshly. And we\u2019ll wait till we do that before we go, in which case we\u2019ll have safety either way.\u201d<\/p>

Trump also said the U.S. could monitor the activity because it has \u201ccameras up in space\u201d thanks to his Space Force.<\/p>

\u201cYou know, we have cameras on it, all over it. If anybody walked there, if you walked over there, I would be able to read your first name on your lapel,\u201d he told \u201cMeet the Press\u201d moderator Kristen Welker. \u201cAnd these are cameras up in space. It\u2019s pretty amazing technology.\u201d<\/p>

In his most detailed remarks to date about the status of negotiations for a permanent halt to the conflict and his approach to a potential deal, Trump said he is looking to keep U.S. troops deployed in the region until \u201ccompletion\u201d and said, \u201cI don\u2019t consider them in danger.\u201d<\/p>

The two sides are \u201cvery close\u201d to signing a pact, Trump said, but he is pushing for Iran to go further in abandoning its nuclear ambitions.<\/p>

\u201cWe have a couple of points. They don\u2019t even seem like big points,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019ve conceded the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons. We had a clause in there that [they] will not develop nuclear weapons. And everybody was very happy with it except me.\u201d<\/p>

Trump said he wanted an additional provision to ensure Iran can\u2019t execute an end run around a deal.<\/p>

\u201cAnd I said, \u2018Well, what happens if they, not develop, but they go out and purchase, they acquire? I want to put the word, \u2018if they buy, purchase or acquire,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cYou know, you\u2019ve got to have that in there, too, because that\u2019s not developing. So, they don\u2019t have the right to develop or purchase, acquire or buy.\u201d<\/p>

He added that the Iranians pushed back \u201ca little bit\u201d on his demand. \u201cAnd then they didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>

Trump said that he is finding Iran\u2019s new leadership to be \u201cmore rational, very smart\u201d after attacks by Israel and the U.S. killed former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and many of his lieutenants. Khamenei\u2019s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has taken his father\u2019s place and is \u201cpart of\u201d the approval process for a deal, Trump said, adding that he is open to direct talks with the new supreme leader.<\/p>

\u201cI would if he\u2019d like to,\u201d Trump said, \u201cbut I have not spoken to him directly.\u201d<\/p>

The president favorably compared Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen in public since the war began, to his father.<\/p>

\u201cYounger. I think more rational,\u201d Trump said. \u201cInjured. He\u2019s pretty badly injured. So there\u2019s a certain bravery there. A lot of people, if they were injured that badly, they wouldn\u2019t be talking about, you know, \u2018How are we doing with the United States?\u2019 They\u2019d have other things on their mind. So there\u2019s a certain bravery there. But he is very seriously injured.\u201d<\/p>

Trump declined to say definitively whether he knows the Iranian leader\u2019s exact location or whether that location is in Iran.<\/p>

\u201cI don\u2019t want to say whether or not I know where he is,\u201d Trump said. \u201cBut there\u2019s a good probability that I do.\u201d<\/p>

The interview was set in a barn with a metal roof and took place before Trump appeared at a roundtable discussion devoted to the farming industry. A rainstorm pelted the roof, delaying the interview repeatedly, and a technical issue caused another interruption. Trump ended the interview about 50 minutes after sitting down, after becoming visibly frustrated during a back-and-forth over election interference and his criticism of the press.<\/p>

The war has proved unpopular, with polls consistently showing a majority of the public opposes it. Sixty-eight percent of adults said the U.S. \u201cshould make a deal to end the war in Iran as quickly as possible\u201d in an released this week, including 55% of voters who favored Trump in the 2024 election. Trump campaigned that year in part on the reminder that he had started \u201cno new wars\u201d in his first term.<\/p>

But the president suggested in the interview that Americans should have more patience with Iran, adding that part of the challenge in turning around a quick peace plan is that it requires a full reversal of Tehran\u2019s longtime stance toward the U.S.<\/p>

\u201cBecause they\u2019re strong. They\u2019re proud,\u201d he said of the Iranians. \u201cThere are things they never thought they\u2019d be doing that they\u2019re going to have to do. They\u2019ve got no choice. And it takes a little while. You know, you\u2019re talking about 47 years of getting away with whatever they wanted.\u201d<\/p>
